During the 2024-2025 period, Grange were selected by AE Yates Ltd and Wills Brothers Ltd to provide fully third-party accredited on-site concrete for three major wind farm developments in Lanarkshire: Cumberhead West, Hagshaw, and later, Douglas West Extension. Across these projects, Grange delivered more than 45,000 m³ of high-specification structural concrete within an 11-month period.
In early 2024, Grange was approached separately by AE Yates Ltd and Wills Brothers Ltd to supply third-party accredited on-site concrete for two wind farms in Lanarkshire. The first project, Cumberhead West Wind Farm, required the supply of twenty 1,000 m³ turbine bases. The second, Hagshaw Wind Farm, comprised fourteen 600 m³ bases.
To service both projects simultaneously—and to provide full secondary plant backup—Grange established a shared compound on the periphery of the two sites. Two Grange mobile batching plants, Mobiles 1 and 3, were commissioned at this location. This arrangement ensured that during every pour, a secondary plant was immediately available should any mechanical issues arise. It also provided a potential production capacity of up to 150 m³ per hour, safeguarding against schedule pressures caused by site delays.
The high-specification structural concrete supplied to both projects was designed in strict accordance with the project specifications by the Grange Technical Department. Mix designs were developed and trialled at Grange’s central laboratory in Kirkburn Industrial Estate, Lockerbie, followed by site trials for consulting engineer approval before the first pours. This process ensured a seamless transition from design to supply. Grange maintained full conformity for all concrete supplied through continuous conformity testing, ensuring full third-party Kitemark compliance.
Materials for the projects were carefully selected to balance sustainability and economic efficiency. A tailored blend of admixtures was used to maximise compressive strength while maintaining pumpability and minimising curing times. During the supply of Cumberhead West and Hagshaw, inquiries were received regarding a third wind farm project: Douglas West Extension. This contract involved a further thirteen 1,000 m³ turbine bases. Preparatory work was carried out by Grange Technical Services in late 2024, and the project was completed in April 2025.
Supplying these projects presented several complex logistical challenges, including:
- Variable distances between turbine bases: Travel times ranged from 10 minutes to over an hour across the large geographical area covered by the three wind farms.
- Single-track access roads: Traffic-control systems were required to ensure safe delivery to each pour location.
- Winter weather impacts: Truck mixer drivers encountered significant challenges during several pours.
- High-volume pours: Larger bases required more than 20 truck mixers operating simultaneously across multiple delivery routes.
The full programme—including all three contracts—was successfully completed in April 2025. In total, Grange supplied more than 45,000 m³ of concrete and associated materials over an 11-month period. Upon completion, the two batching plants were dismantled and redeployed to their next projects.
