In 2025, Grange were approached by I H Brown regarding the supply of 5,000 m³ of concrete for turbine bases at the Whitelaw Brae Wind Farm in the Scottish Borders. The initial proposal was to supply the project from Grange’s static plant in Lockerbie, as the geographical distance was considered acceptable.
Following further discussions with the client, it was identified that this supply arrangement presented several challenges, particularly in relation to sustainability and maintaining customer satisfaction for both the Whitelaw Brae project and Grange’s existing customers at the Lockerbie plant. These challenges included excessive travel time between the Lockerbie depot and site, reduced availability for both collect and delivery customers at Lockerbie on pour days, and increased diesel consumption associated with long-distance haulage.
In response, Grange entered into further dialogue with I H Brown to explore the feasibility of installing a mobile batching plant on site. Agreement was subsequently reached, and Grange Mobile Plant No. 4 was commissioned at short notice at the Whitelaw Brae site, complete with full Kitemark accreditation.
This revised arrangement delivered a number of key improvements over the original supply plan, including a reduction in the number of vehicles required per pour, associated fuel savings and a reduction in embodied carbon, lower overall emissions, and full availability of concrete supply for Lockerbie plant customers during Whitelaw Brae pour days. Additionally, there was a general reduction in heavy vehicle movements on public roads, resulting in less road wear, reduced tyre wear, and improved local environmental impact.
Through careful logistical assessment and close collaboration with I H Brown, a solution was implemented that minimised disruption to all customers while demonstrating that effective planning can successfully balance customer satisfaction with climate change and net-zero objectives.
